Akasa Air and Noida International Airport form partnership to develop MRO facility

Akasa Air and Noida International Airport (NIA) have signed a strategic partnership that will see the airline establish its first MRO facility at the airport, which is under construction near Jewar in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The agreement is intended to support the development of NIA as a major MRO hub in India, while expanding domestic aircraft maintenance capability as the country’s aviation market continues to grow.

Akasa Air said its planned facility will be located within the airport premises and is expected to provide a range of aircraft maintenance services, supporting operational efficiency and safety standards.

The partners said the project will also create local employment opportunities and support skills development in the surrounding region, while contributing to a broader aviation ecosystem linked to long-term growth.

The partnership aligns with the ambitions of both the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh to position the airport as a key MRO centre and strengthen self-reliance in aviation maintenance.

Christoph Schnellmann, chief executive of NIA, said: “Akasa Air’s decision to establish its first MRO facility in India at Noida International Airport is a strong endorsement of our vision to build a world-class aviation hub for India.

“This partnership will not only enhance India’s MRO capabilities but also create opportunities for skill development and employment in the region.”

Vinay Dube, founder and chief executive of Akasa Air, said: “Our partnership with Noida International Airport reflects how we think about building Akasa Air for the long term. As India’s aviation market continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, developing strong domestic MRO capabilities will be critical for airlines to operate efficiently and reliably at scale.

“For Akasa Air, investing early in this capability is part of a disciplined approach to growth, strengthening our operational backbone while contributing to the development of a more self-reliant aviation ecosystem in India.”

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) was established for the development, construction and operation of NIA. The company, a 100% subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, is responsible for the implementation of the public-private partnership project in close partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India.

The concession period for NIA commenced on October 1, 2021, and will run for 40 years.

The airport will feature one runway and one passenger terminal with a capacity to serve 12 million passengers annually. The airport‘s masterplan provides for further development over the duration of the concession to serve over 70 million passengers annually.
