Jet fuel crisis “a growing threat” to essential regional business travel

Business travel across the UK and Europe is facing a serious threat as low-cost and regional airlines struggle with fuel shortages and high prices. With jet fuel costs sitting roughly 40% higher than usual, the budget carriers that many companies rely on for regional connectivity are under intense pressure.

Clive Wratton, CEO of the Business Travel Association, warned that these issues are creating a “growing barrier” to essential travel.

“Ongoing concerns around the availability of aviation fuel, as well as rising costs, are now beginning to directly impact flight schedules, capacity and reliability. For business travellers, this is not simply an inconvenience, it is a growing barrier to essential travel,” he said.

“Reports of constrained fuel supply are creating uncertainty for airlines, in some cases contributing to reduced routes and even flight cancellations,” he added. “When combined with increasing fuel costs driving up airfares, this is placing real pressure on organisations that rely on regular, reliable travel.”

While larger airlines use financial hedging to freeze their costs temporarily, many smaller regional operators are more exposed to market price spikes. As these protections expire, flight reliability is expected to decline further.

The BTA warns that reduced business mobility could slow down the UK’s economic productivity. To protect your operations, government and industry leaders must work together to stabilise fuel access. Without more reliable supply chains, the “quick and efficient” travel that businesses depend on remains at risk.
