In June 2025, the IDF released footage showing the moment two Tomcats in an airport in Tehran were destroyed by a drone strike. (Image credit: X)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The Persian Tomcats<\/h3>\n<p>The Persian Tomcats are the world\u2019s last operational F-14s, after the main user, the U.S. Navy, retired the type in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Iran initially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2013\/02\/11\/shah-f-14-tomcat\/\">ordered 80 examples<\/a> for the Imperial Iranian Air Force, with 79 being delivered beginning in February 1976. This was before the Shah of Iran was deposed from power in 1979, giving birth to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the aircraft passing in the hands of the current\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2014\/02\/21\/new-photo-splinter-iriaf-tomcat\/\">Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force<\/a>\u00a0(IRIAF).<\/p>\n<p>While the number of residual Iranian aircraft had been subject to debate well before 2025, no more than 30 airframes should have been at their disposal. Some of the Tomcats were upgraded to <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2015\/03\/01\/iriaf-f-14s-overhauled\/\">F-14AM (\u201cModernized\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0standard that includes domestic avionics (radar and RWR) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2012\/03\/26\/iriaf-f14\/\">weapons:<\/a> R-73E, AIM-54A, AIM-7E and AIM-9J. Iran also says it has integrated local weapons on the Tomcat, such as the Fakour-90 air-to-air missile based on the AIM-54 Phoenix and the MIM-23 Hawk.<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103216\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IRIAF-F-14-destroyed-top.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-103216\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IRIAF-F-14-destroyed-top-706x397.jpg\" alt=\"Iranian F-14\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo of an Iranian Air Force F-14 at Mehrabad Airport in 2013. (Image credit: Mohammad Shaltouki\/Wiki)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The IRIAF has two types of F-14As: PMC (Partially Mission-Capable) ones, usually suitable for training and which can become FMC in case of war, and Fully Mission-Capable Tomcats with fully operable fire control system, armament system and INS. These FMC F-14As are usually used for 24\/7 Quick Reaction Alert and other combat missions. It was previously reported that usually 70% of the airworthy Tomcats are FMC.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, during <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2018\/12\/19\/kish-air-show-a-unique-opportunity-to-see-the-worlds-last-flying-f-14-tomcat-jets-in-action-and-much-more\/\">Iran International Air Show at Kish Island<\/a>, around two dozen F-14s were estimated to be fully ready for combat, with partial readiness maintained for 16 more airframes. Similarly, a survey by <em>Flight Global<\/em> estimated that, as of 2019, the IRIAF operated 24 F-14s at Tactical Fighter Base 8.<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64548\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/FoxTwo.pl_Leszek_Kujawski_KISH-Iran-18_05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-64548\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/FoxTwo.pl_Leszek_Kujawski_KISH-Iran-18_05-706x441.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"441\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Persian Tomcat during Kish 2018 airshow.
