The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forsvaret.no\/en\/news\/articles\/qra-core\">statement<\/a> stressed that these events are now routine, but also said they were expected as the country is currently hosting NATO\u2019s Exercise Cold Response 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to emphasize that there is nothing unusual or dramatic about such Russian flights, and Russia has the right to conduct these missions,\u201d said the Norwegian Armed Forces. \u201cThe Russian flights are most likely intended to gather situational awareness of allied activity in connection with Cold Response 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Norwegian sensors detected Russian Il\u201120M aircraft off Finnmark Coast Tuesday and today. While NORAD did not confirm whether Russian aircraft were surveilling the exercise, the proximity in timing is notable.<\/p>\n<h3>The Intercepts<\/h3>\n<p>The Norwegian Armed Forces said the two intercepts were conducted on Mar. 10 and 11, 2026. The photos released show that the Il-20M aircraft involved was the same on both days, with the aircraft bearing the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/04\/26\/swedish-gripens-first-nato-air-policing-scramble\/\">serial RF-95671<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Mar. 10, the aircraft was flying in international airspace off Finnmark, said the statement. The Il-20M was \u201cidentified and shadowed by two Norwegian F-35s before it turned north from S\u00f8r\u00f8ya and returned to the Kola Peninsula around 12:00.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103279\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260310_U_5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-103279\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260310_U_5-706x397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Russian Il-20M intercepted by a Norwegian F-35A on Mar. 10, 2026. The aircraft \u201cwas flying with its transponder switched off but was routinely detected by Norwegian sensors around 09:30.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/04\/05\/norway-completes-f-35-program-of-record\/\">Norwegian F-35s<\/a> on Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duty were scrambled from Evenes Air Station. The Lightning II <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2022\/01\/07\/f-35-qra-from-f-16-norway\/\">took over the QRA mission<\/a> from the F-16 Fighting Falcon in 2022.<\/p>\n<h3>Russian Il-20M<\/h3>\n<p>The intercepted aircraft was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2020\/09\/12\/the-italian-typhoons-supporting-nato-baltic-air-policing-in-lithuania-intercept-a-russian-il-20m-elint-aircraft\/\">Ilyushin Il-20M<\/a>, known by its NATO reporting name \u201cCoot.\u201d The Il-20M is a specialized reconnaissance and electronic intelligence (ELINT) platform, equipped with an array wide array of antennas, IR (Infrared) and Optical sensors, a SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar) and satellite communication equipment to gather electronic and communications intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft can be used for intelligence gathering missions, eavesdropping the communications, detecting ground, maritime and aerial systems\u2019 emissions and pinpointing their positions to build an Electronic Order of Battle of the NATO assets in the region.<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103280\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260311_U_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-103280\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/20260311_U_1-706x397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Russian Il-20M intercepted by Norway on Mar. 11, 2026. (Image credit: Norwegian Armed Forces)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Russian Il-20s <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2019\/10\/01\/take-a-look-at-these-somehow-unusual-shots-of-a-special-colored-rdaf-f-16-intercepting-a-russian-il-20m-spyplane\/\">regularly perform<\/a> long-range reconnaissance missions in the Baltic region, flying in international airspace with its transponder turned off. The type has been employed in various theaters, including Syria, where Russian Il-20s supported military operations and one was accidentally shot down by Syrian air defenses in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the flights in the Baltic region, the Coot also flew within the Alaskan ADIZ in some rare occasions, especially when large scale exercises are in progress. One such instance was in August 2025 during Northern Edge 25, which involved some 6,400 personnel, 100 aircraft, and seven ships \u2013 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/01\/26\/usaf-announces-exercises-middle-east\/\">USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) aircraft carrier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, the Cold Response 26 exercise is currently ongoing and, with the variety of assets and capabilities deployed, that would be a hard-to-pass target for data collection. The exercise is Norway\u2019s largest military exercise in 2026, taking place in Northern Norway and Finland, and in the seas outside North Norway from Mar. 9 to 19.<\/p>\n<p>The Norwegian-led biennial winter exercise gathers 32,500 participants, of which 7,500 in Finland and 25,000 in Norway. Of the participants in Norway, 11,800\u00a0are training on Norwegian ground, while the rest will be at sea and in the air, according to statements.<\/p>\n<p>Norway explained that the main land and air activity takes place in northern Norway and northern Finland, while sea activity\u00a0will take place in the maritime areas off the coast of Norway. The exercise will demonstrate \u201cNorway\u2019s and NATO\u2019s ability to defend the Alliance\u2019s northern flank,\u201d as well as enhance interoperability among allied forces and support the integration of Finland and Sweden into NATO, said the statements.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel with the live exercise, the Norwegian Armed Forces say a large-scale simulation is also being conducted, involving significantly larger simulated forces than those participating physically. \u201cThis increases the realism, complexity and demands placed on the participating headquarter,\u201d says the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. deployed multiple assets, including F-35A Lightning IIs assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing at <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/02\/17\/six-f22-raptors-arrive-raf-lakenheath\/\">RAF Lakenheath<\/a>, UK, which will fly out of \u00d8rland, Norway.
