The aircraft has already earned a number of monikers, from the \u201cPlatypus\u201d already held by its predecessor \u2013 the EC-1 \u2013 to the \u201cworld\u2019s ugliest aircraft,\u201d with the latter sparking debate in the aviation community about which aircraft should hold this title.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/02\/17\/japans-ec-2-stand-off-jammer-breaks-cover\/\">was first spotted at Gifu Air Base<\/a> in February 2026, parked on the apron. Few days ago, the aircraft was spotted again while conducting taxi testing both at low and high speed in preparation for the first flight, with the number of photos and videos online quickly increasing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">JASDF, in coordination with ATLA, supported the first flight of the stand-off electronic warfare aircraft<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6e9.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udee9\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f4e1.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udce1\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/>. Notably, the airframe selected for the conversion is the former C-2 18-1203, the type\u2019s first production airframe.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft has been modified with a bulbous nose \u2013 similar to the EC-1 it will replace \u2013 as well as two large bulges on the top of the fuselage, while two more are located on the sides of the fuselage between the wings and the horizontal stabilizers. The airframe used for this program is the former C-2 18-1202, the type\u2019s second prototype.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft was modified with similar, but smaller, bulges compared to the EC-2. These include an enlarged nose section, two bulges on the top of the fuselage, two on the sides of the rear portion of the fuselage, as well as enlarged fairings on top of the tail and the tail cone.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear which type of specialized equipment is installed, but these would normally includes multiple arrays and antenna for wideband receivers, supported by signal processing hardware. These will allow the RC-2 platform to collect and analyze signals from an adversary\u2019s emitters in order to generate an <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/07\/28\/france-archange-sigint-aircraft-first-flight\/\">Electronic Order of Battle<\/a> (EOB).<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103431\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Kawasaki_RC-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-103431\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Kawasaki_RC-2-706x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"484\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo of the RC-2 taking off for a sortie. The aircraft replaced the obsolete JASDF\u2019s YS-11EB aircraft of the Electronic Intelligence Squadron retired in 2021, a year after the RC-2 was officially inducted in service.<\/p>\n<p>The RC-2 is explicitly mentioned in the Japanese MoD\u2019s budget document in the line regarding the acquisition of a single SIGINT aircraft for \u00a549.6 billion. This line is part of the same \u00a5508.6 billion investment to strengthen intelligence collection and analysis capabilities which includes the EC-2.<\/p>\n<h3>Kawasaki C-2<\/h3>\n<p>The C-2 is a long range twin-engine transport aircraft designed by Kawasaki to replace its earlier\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2020\/01\/13\/take-a-look-at-this-glorious-footage-of-the-last-japanese-kawasaki-c-1-transport-aircraft-at-work\/\">C-1 transport aircraft<\/a>. The aircraft is, like its predecessor, a homegrown Japanese design, which flew for the first time in January 2010 and entered service six years later in 2016 with 18 airframes.<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99794\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/c2arrivalconingsby_5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-99794\" src=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/c2arrivalconingsby_5-706x530.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first and third Kawasaki C-2 aircraft. (Image credit: Japanese Ministry of Defense)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While smaller than other four-engined jet transport aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster III, the C-2 is significantly larger than the C-1 it replaced or the other twin-engine military jet cargo aircraft, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/02\/07\/elbit-ew-isr-variant-c-390-millenium\/\">Embraer C-390<\/a>. The aircraft is roughly equivalent in capacity to the Airbus A400M, but offers a higher cruise speed, service ceiling, and increased range.<\/p>\n<p>The C-2 is capable of transporting 110 people and can fly for about 7,600 kilometers (4,100\u00a0NM) with 20 tons of cargo or 4,500\u00a0km ( 2,400\u00a0NM) with a payload of 36\u00a0tons. The aircraft is also able to take-off in 500 m from semi-prepared runways.<\/p>\n<p>The C-2 uses General Electric CF6 turbofan engines which are widely employed in both civilian and military service.
