{"id":1863,"date":"2026-03-19T21:02:54","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T21:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zephyrsys.us\/index.php\/2026\/03\/19\/russia-sends-mig-31s-armed-with-kinzhal-hypersonic-missiles-over-sea-of-japan\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T21:02:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T21:02:54","slug":"russia-sends-mig-31s-armed-with-kinzhal-hypersonic-missiles-over-sea-of-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zephyrsys.us\/index.php\/2026\/03\/19\/russia-sends-mig-31s-armed-with-kinzhal-hypersonic-missiles-over-sea-of-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia Sends MiG-31s Armed with Kinzhal Hypersonic Missiles Over Sea of Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Russia-MiG31-Kinzhal-Japan-1b-460x259.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"MiG-31 Kinzhal Indo-Pacific\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Russian Aerospace Forces publicized for the first time the MiG-31 armed with the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic hypersonic missile flying in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/h2>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defense (RuMoD) released footage on <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/mod_russia_en\/26109\">Mar. 17, 2026<\/a>, of its <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2022\/03\/19\/russia-kinzhal-ukraine\/\">MiG-31I jets carrying the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal<\/a> hypersonic Air-Launched Ballistic Missiles (ALBM) while flying over the Sea of Japan. <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/11\/29\/china-russia-joint-patrol-sea-of-japan\/\">Russian and Chinese jets have been flying joint patrols<\/a> over the region for a few years now, with the last such combined flight reported by Japan and South Korea on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mod.go.jp\/js\/pdf\/2025\/p20251211_02e.pdf\">Dec. 9, 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These have usually consisted of Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/02\/20\/f-35-f-16-as-seen-from-tu-95\/\">Tu-95 Bear<\/a> bombers, <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/06\/04\/russian-a-50u-struck-by-ukrainian-fpv-drones\/\">A-50 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&amp;C)<\/a> aircraft, Su-30 fighter jets, together with Chinese J-16 fighter jets and <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/07\/14\/chinas-h-6k-bomber-spotted-carrying-four-carrier-killer-ballistic-missiles-for-the-first-time\/\">H-6K\/N<\/a> bombers. MiG-31Is with the Kinzhal, however, are absolutely rare.<\/p>\n<p>Russian military aviation analyst <a href=\"http:\/\/v\/\">Guy Plopsky<\/a>, who also shared images from the RuMoD video, told us this is at least the first time the ministry has released the video of the MiG-31I and the Kinzhal over this particular region.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Several stills from a new Russian MoD video showing two VKS MiG-31I strike aircraft receiving fuel from an Il-78M tanker during a scheduled mission over the Sea of Japan. During the flight, MiG-31 aircraft crews practised refuelling in the air. All flights of Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft are carried out in strict compliance with international rules on the use of airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cGiven that the MiG-31s were operating from Vladivostok, it is perhaps more likely that the Su-30s were from the 22nd IAP(Tsentralnaya Uglovaya) as it is near Vladivostok,\u201d Plopsky told <em>The Aviationist<\/em>. This therefore brings us to the diplomatic motivations behind such a flight.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Diplomatic overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There could be two geopolitical explanations behind such a provocative flight with major strategic weapons over the Sea of Japan. However, as we explained in context of the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/01\/30\/iran-mi-28-helicopters\/\">delivery of Mi-28 Havoc attack helicopters to Tehran<\/a>, this largely amounts to mere geopolitical posturing and does virtually nothing to impact U.S. operations over Iran.
