The small but clear marking almost certainly denotes a direct hit against an Iranian air defence radar site or surface to air missile unit. Dating from 1918, the unit is one of the most historic in the U.S. Air Force, through its history operating aircraft like the P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang, F-100 Super Sabre, and the F-111 Aardvark.<\/p>\n Let\u2019s delve into archives. This simulated strike sortie against a target across the Atlantic in Canada was in fact a dry rehearsal for Operation El Dorado Canyon<\/a>, which would be flown against Libya by F-111s from RAF Lakenheath the following year.\u00a0<\/p>\n In 1961, the 79th took the lead in forming what is now known as the NATO Tiger Association. This group of squadrons from NATO air arms was formed to promote community and camaraderie between NATO air crews. The running theme for each unit is the use of a tiger, or tiger stripes, as part of their identity. The 79th FS\u2019 tiger stripes can be seen in their fin marking. Each year, the association gathers for a \u2018Tiger Meet\u2019, comprising both exercises and networking.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
\nThe HARM works like this: passive homing on radar emissions from an air-defence radar, or \u2014 in modern variants \u2014 INS\/GPS guidance for an approach by coordinates and a home-on-jam mode.
