Though unconfirmed at the time, these were widely expected to be intended to deploy Hydra 70 rockets fitted with the BAE Systems Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) guidance kit.<\/p>\n<p>Initially developed for surface targets, APKWS has taken on a <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/03\/16\/a-10-thunderbolt-iis-operation-epic-fury\/\">critical new role<\/a> with its ability to shoot down small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) at a fraction of the cost of traditional air to air munitions \u2013 and, with up to seven munitions per rocket pod, it vastly expands a fighter aircraft\u2019s ammunition load, ideal for <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/04\/14\/developing-iran-has-launched-a-massive-drone-and-missile-attack-on-israel\/\">swarms of drones<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104591\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/TyphoonAPKWSOperational_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-104591 size-large\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baesystems.com\/en\/article\/apkws-typhoon-trials\">official announcement<\/a> in April, when BAE Systems said the Typhoon had successfully employed the weapon against ground targets. <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/tag\/c-uas\/\">Counter-UAS (C-UAS)<\/a> was specifically mentioned as a primary capability of the system, and air to air trials were due to commence in pace rarely seen for weapon integration onto modern combat aircraft, the weapon has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-deploys-new-low-cost-anti-drone-system-in-the-middle-east\">been put into operational service<\/a> with 9 Squadron, RAF. 9 Squadron \u2013 sometimes written in Roman numerals as IX (Bomber) Squadron \u2013 is currently deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/03\/02\/greece-reinforces-cyprus\/\">RAF Akrotiri<\/a>, the UK\u2019s forward sovereign base on the island of Cyprus, and has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raf.mod.uk\/news\/articles\/from-lancaster-to-lightning-ix-bomber-and-617-squadrons-fly-together-again\/\">actively engaged in defensive counter-air missions<\/a> to defend the base, Cyprus, and the UK\u2019s interests in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">RAF Typhoon and F-35B aircraft have conducted long-range Defensive Counter Air patrols in support of HMS Dragon in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>These missions were enabled by Voyager air-to-air refuelling across the Middle East,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As well as boosting the Typhoon\u2019s C-UAS capabilities, APKWS will bring a welcome option for precision strike against small, soft targets like many of those encountered in Iraq and Syria <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/01\/04\/uk-france-strike-targets-daesh-syria\/\">during Operation Shader<\/a>.
