The milestone was reached \u201cthree months ahead of schedule\u201d at the Y12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>The NNSA explained in a press release that \u201c\u2018Diamond stamping\u2019 signifies that a weapon component has met all the requirements of NNSA\u2019s rigorous certification process and is approved for deployment to the U.S. nuclear stockpile as \u2018war reserve\u2019 quality.\u201d The milestone also comes a little over a year after the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) revealed the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/05\/19\/first-b61-13-nuclear-bomb-completed\/\">B61-13\u2019s first Joint Test Assembly (JTA) in March 2025<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/05\/19\/first-b61-13-nuclear-bomb-completed\/\">first completed bomb unit<\/a> a few months later in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The NNSA explained that the CSA component in a modern two-stage thermonuclear weapon includes the secondary stage capsule and \u201cother parts sealed (canned) within a thin metal container made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy.\u201d This is combined with the primary stage \u2013 the warhead\u2019s nuclear explosive package.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/17.0.2\/72x72\/1f6a8.png\" alt=\"\ud83d\udea8\" class=\"wp-smiley\" \/>NNSA has completed \u201cdiamond stamping\u201d of all planned B61-13 nuclear gravity bomb canned subassemblies (CSAs) for the current Fiscal Year\u2014three months ahead of schedule at <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/y12nsc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@y12nsc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This early milestone underscores our commitment to delivering on President Trump\u2019s national\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BH90dCktTz\">pic.twitter.com\/BH90dCktTz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NNSA (@NNSANews) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NNSANews\/status\/2074868023421194444?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The B61-13 has been described as a \u201cmodern variant of the B61 nuclear bomb, the longest-serving and most versatile weapon in America\u2019s nuclear stockpile.\u201d The new bomb is designed to \u201cdefeat hard and deeply buried targets,\u201d and will be certified for delivery by strategic bombers of the U.S. Air Force, including the new B-21 Raider.<\/p>\n<p>The B61-12 Life-Extension Program (LEP) and the production of the new B61-13 are being carried out in a way that does not change the number of nuclear gravity drop bombs in the U.S. inventory. As we explained in a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/01\/09\/b61-12-lep-completed\/\">report about the B61-12\u2019s LEP<\/a> in January 2025, the B61-13 will replace some of the B61-7s in the current stockpile and the number of B61-12s to be produced will be lowered by the same amount as the number of B61-13s produced.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Important milestone<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the press release, NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said the progress on the B61-13 program demonstrates the Nuclear Security Enterprise\u2019s \u201cability to respond to evolving geopolitical requirements with speed and precision.\u201d Williams further added that \u201ccompleting the 2026 baseline deliverables ahead of schedule is a clear indicator of discipline and operational focus,\u201d and \u201csends a message to our adversaries that our national defense remains agile, secure and effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105566\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/B61-13-Nuclear-Bomb-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-105566\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/B61-13-Nuclear-Bomb-2-706x397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A B61-13. | Source: Sandia National Laboratories<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Additionally, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandia.gov\/news\/publications\/labs-accomplishments\/article\/2026\/nuclear-deterrence-10\/\">separate update on the SNL website<\/a> reported 32 flight tests of inert weapons across the nuclear triad. Among these were \u201cone air-launched cruise missile test with the W80,\u201d conducted at the Utah Test and Training Range, and two B61-13 \u201cearth-penetrator weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency generically mentioned \u201cflight and ground tests,\u201d but it is unclear if the B61-13 also underwent drop tests. Also, the mention of the W80 warhead suggests a test of the W80-1 warhead of the AGM-86 Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM), or the W80-4 meant for the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/03\/21\/b-52-spotted-again-agm-181-lrso\/\">AGM-181 Long-Range Stand Off<\/a> (LRSO) missile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>B61-13<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The B61-13 uses the older B61-7\u2019s warhead, which had a yield ranging from 10 to 360 kt, but also features enhanced safety and accuracy mechanisms and improved components. By March 2025, SNL revealed the B61-13\u2019s first Joint Test Assembly (JTA) \u2013 a test article without the live nuclear warhead for various ground trials, as well as aerial captive carry and separation trials.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2025, the NNSA <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/05\/19\/first-b61-13-nuclear-bomb-completed\/\">announced the production of the first B61-13<\/a> nuclear bomb at the Pantex plant in Amarillo, Texas.
