Thunder is able to operate as an intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) node as well as a fully fledged combat asset boasting air to surface missiles, tube-launched drones, counter-drone effectors, or up to 76 70 mm rockets.

Thunder is pitched, Anduril says, to deliver affordable mass to even the most heavily defended of battlespaces. From the outset, Thunder is designed for manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) operations with crewed rotary wing assets like the Chinook. The company says a single Apache teamed with three Thunder units could carry three times the number of munitions into the fight without risking any additional personnel.

Close-up of some of the weaponry shown carried by Thunder in Anduril’s official images (cropped). | Source: Anduril

It is a large aircraft, classed as a Group 5 UAS alongside mainstays of drone warfare like the MQ-9 Reaper. Rotor RPM is variable in flight, able to be configured for maximum efficiency, peak performance, or a combination of the two, as well as enabling a reduced acoustic signature when necessary.

Alongside the headline combat role, Anduril says the new tiltrotor could be deployed for maritime patrol using its modular ISR payloads, or even for logistics use where the module bays could be used for cargo stowage.

Rising Startup

Anduril, founded less than a decade ago by a group of entrepreneurs, including most notably the Oculus VR founder and billionaire Palmer Luckey, has quickly become one of the most talked about names within the field of drone and AI technology.

Though the company – named for a sword featured in J.
