Much of the necessary development is able to be completed in a virtual environment, with the company\u2019s view being that any available money is \u201cbest spent\u201d on this and mission systems development rather than more flight testing than absolutely required.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Enabling this, Leonardo uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/08\/30\/x-56a-digitally-certified\/\">\u2018digital twin\u2019<\/a> of Proteus to conduct advanced testing without physical test flying.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105810\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ProteusContractFIA_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-105810\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/ProteusContractFIA_2-706x470.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"470\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leonardo\u2019s Proteus helicopter at FIA 2026. | Source: Author<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Proteus, as a demonstrator, is not envisioned to directly enter operational service but will directly inform the development of operational models. At the most basic level, however, an autonomous vehicle could be directed to deploy patterns of sonobuoys or deploy a dipping sonar at various programmed locations. Any data produced could then be streamed back to a crewed helicopter, ship, or shore station for processing.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of Leonardo\u2019s response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/07\/04\/uk-defence-investment-plan-at-a-glance\/\">Defence Investment Plan (DIP)<\/a>, the company is still in the process of digesting what it means both for the firm and for UK defence as a whole.
