Germany\u2019s Foreign and Interior Ministers spoke publicly in Berlin on Sep. 1, 2026, to publicly announce new measures the German government will take against Russia in light of \u201cpolice investigations\u201d and \u201cintelligence findings\u201d which conclude that a \u201clow-level\u201d Russian agent was behind the drone incidents at Leipzig in August<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Security services were first alerted to a potential threat when a quadcopter drone was discovered on the airport tarmac next to a parked Antonov An-124 belonging to the Ukrainian state-owned Antonov Airlines<\/a>. 800 grams of explosives were attached to the drone, which CCTV footage showed impacting the wing of the aircraft before falling to the ground without detonating.\u00a0<\/p>\n Antonov\u2019s aircraft have used Leipzig Airport in central eastern Germany as a hub for many years, though it has become the airline\u2019s primary base of operations since Russia\u2019s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Its fleet of An-124 transports<\/a>, the heaviest active transport aircraft type in the world, are used extensively to support and supply Ukraine\u2019s defensive efforts. The airport, then, would be a lucrative target for any Russian or Russia-aligned actors<\/a>.<\/p>\n Germany\u2019s response underlines the importance of close coordination among Allies. #NATO<\/a> stands united in protecting our countries and deterring threats across the Alliance. Support for #Ukraine<\/a> and strengthened defence capabilities remain essential to our collective security. 2\/2<\/p>\n \u2014 Germany at NATO (@GermanyNATO) September 1, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n After the An-124 incident, following the airport\u2019s closure for security reasons, a Boeing 757-200<\/a> freighter operated by European Air Transport for carrier DHL struck an object while aborting its landing. Minor damage was identified on the nose of the aircraft after it landed at another airport. It is believed this object was another drone, potentially operating alongside the one that was apparently intended to strike and damage the An-124.\u00a0<\/p>\n U.S. intelligence has reportedly linked the explosive-laden drone discovered at Germany\u2019s Leipzig\/Halle Airport this week to the Russian government, according to The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n The drone was discovered Tuesday night inside a secure area of the airport, just meters from\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/4w5KulzYMm<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 OSINTdefender (@sentdefender) August 7, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n A third drone<\/a> was discovered later in the month in a field near to the airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n Johann Wadephul, the German Foreign Minister, told reporters: \u201cWith the attempted attack in Leipzig, the Russian leadership has, in fact, deliberately chosen to further and significantly damage our already severely strained bilateral relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said: \u201cTaken together, police investigations, patterns of the offences and intelligence findings establish Russian responsibility for the attempted attack at Leipzig Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n German Interior Minister Dobrindt: \u201cLadies and gentlemen, we are not at war. A Russian state-owned cultural hub in Berlin, Russia House, would also be shuttered. Russia\u2019s ambassador was also summoned by the German government, likely to be delivered an official message and protest to be conveyed to Moscow.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe assume that Germany is the target of further hybrid attacks by Russia. It can also be assumed that there is a willingness to cause even greater damage through hybrid attacks,\u201d Dobrindt added. \u201cThankfully, in Leipzig, this did not happen as had apparently been planned.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Moscow maintains its innocence in the affairs, with its Berlin embassy saying the accusations are \u201cunsubstantiated, absurd and contrary to common sense\u201d.<\/p>\n Germany\u2019s stance has drawn support from its NATO and EU allies. Mark Rutte, General Secretary of NATO, wrote on social media: \u201cThe evidence is clear. And I welcome the measures announced by Germany in response. NATO will continue to strengthen our ability to deter and defend all Allies against any threat \u2013 including malign actions like those seen in Leipzig and elsewhere across the Alliance.\u201d<\/p>\n I just spoke with @Bundeskanzler<\/a> Friedrich Merz.
