The U.S. Air Force MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter, meant to replace the UH-1N Huey<\/a> in the missile-field security and rapid transport of Tactical Response Forces, including Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) convoys support, has reached Initial Operational Capability (IOC), the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) announced on Aug. 31, 2026<\/a>. The IOC, granted on Aug. 10, comes alongside a modernization of the nuclear triad\u2019s land leg, with the new LGM-35A Sentinel<\/a> Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), the service said.<\/p>\n The Sentinel, which will replace the legacy Minuteman III, requires an extensive supporting infrastructure of its own, including new launch facilities, technical support and maintenance equipment, cabling, software and communications systems.<\/p>\n The Grey Wolf\u2019s increased speed, range and payload are commensurate with these upgrades, as the Vietnam-era Huey is phased out.<\/p>\n A newer and \u201cresilient\u201d platform like the Grey Wolf would also better patrol the 20th Air Force\u2019s ICBM launch facilities spread across the 20th Air Force\u2019s approximately 33,600-square-mile area of responsibility, spanning varied terrain including prairies, plains and mountain ranges. The Air Force has also said that the MH-139\u2019s capabilities support Search and Rescue (SAR), disaster response and medical evacuation roles.<\/p>\n MH-139 Grey Wolf achieves Initial Operational Capability, ushering in a new era of modernization for nuclear security operations.https:\/\/t.co\/hN4B8q9qoC<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 U.S. Air Force (@usairforce) September 1, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The IOC follows a series of milestones, including rigorous Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) flights<\/a>; a Nuclear Convoy Course (NCC)<\/a> featuring emergency-response drills with armed Tactical Response Force personnel from Missile Security Operations Squadrons; and the first operational Minuteman III convoy security mission<\/a> in January 2026. In October 2025, Boeing also received a $173 million contract for eight additional helicopters, bringing the total number under contract to 34.<\/p>\n The Air Force release said the IOC for the MH-139 Grey Wolf marks the \u201chistoric transition from the Vietnam-era UH-1N Huey, a platform that served the Air Force for more than five decades.\u201d The MH-139 Grey Wolf offers enhancements across the board, including being nearly 50% faster; being able to carry twice as many troops; and being equipped with better self-defensive systems, suited for modern battlefield threats.<\/p>\n \u201cThese advancements allow security forces to mobilize combat power and arrive on-site sooner than the legacy platform,\u201d the statement said. \u201cFor more than half a century, the UH-1N Huey has been a key element of our Intercontinental Ballistic Missile security, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the crews who flew and maintained it over all these years,\u201d said AFGSC commander Gen. S.L. Davis. \u201cSecuring these missiles demands our best efforts and the MH-139 will significantly improve our capabilities. The integration of the Grey Wolf ensures Global Strike Command remains postured, prepared, and ready to meet any threat to the land leg of the nuclear triad,\u201d Davis added.<\/p>\n The MH-139 Grey Wolf\u2019s kinematics better support the missile field security 24 hours and 365 days mission, across vast and austere terrain. \u201cThe Grey Wolf\u2019s \u201cspeed, range, and modern command-and-control systems are crucial\u201d \u00a0to securing assets during the phased transition to Sentinel\u00a0that marks \u201ca comprehensive overhaul of [U.S.\u2019s] land-based ICBMs.\u201d The \u201cphased transition\u201d needs \u201cuninterrupted operations as new Sentinel sites are brought online, and Minuteman III facilities are decommissioned.\u201d<\/p>\n In Oct. 2025<\/a>, Northrop Grumman, the Sentinel\u2019s developer, announced completing the Critical Design Review (CDR) of the Sentinel\u2019s Launch Support System (LSS). The LSS is a \u201cdigital command and control infrastructure\u201d that supports Sentinel tests and launches, and the CDR paves the way for \u201csystem build, test, and qualification phases.\u201d The LSS would be constructed in Roy, Utah, and deployed at Vandenberg Space Force Base.<\/p>\n \u2014 Northrop Grumman (@NGCNews) October 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n This was followed by a March 27, 2026, release<\/a> announcing the accelerated prototyping of a launch-silo tube for the Sentinel ICBM. The Sentinel program envisages around 400 such launch silos.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve broken ground on a Sentinel launch silo prototype at our facility in Utah. The process included the 550th Helicopter Squadron completing the aircraft\u2019s first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) flight in January 2025.<\/p>\n Then, the January 2026 first operational Minuteman ICBM convoy support mission by the 40th Helicopter Squadron (40th HS) saw the MH-139 \u201csuccessfully escorting maintenance and armored security vehicles over 100 miles during a six-hour movement without needing to refuel.\u201d<\/p>\n The MH-139 was also put through \u201celectromagnetic compatibility testing\u201d in Nov. 2025<\/a> at the Benefield Anechoic Facility (BAF) under the 412th Test Wing\u2019s 772nd Test Squadron at Edwards AFB. The testing on the Grey Wolf, assigned to the 908th Airlift Wing, \u201cevaluated [its] electronic warfare systems and avionics within the highly controlled, radio frequency-isolated environment of the BAF, which is vital for validating its survivability against electromagnetic threats.\u201d<\/p>\n On Aug. 14, 2026, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming, also opened a modernized facility supporting the 37th Helicopter Squadron and the 90th Missile Security Operations Squadron Tactical Response Force.\u00a0<\/p>\n The MH-139A participated in its first Nuclear Convoy Course (NCC).
