Designed to launch small payloads into space, its planned first mission in 2021 has still yet to take place.\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>At eighty feet long and with a wingspan of sixty feet, the Ravn X is a huge autonomous aircraft said to pack two afterburning turbofan engines that allow high subsonic flight up to an altitude of 60,000 feet.<\/p>\n<figure aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106493\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AevumRavnX_3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-106493\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AevumRavnX_3-706x397.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Head on with the Ravn X, showing its impressive size. | Source: Matthew Dawson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At maximum velocity, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2020\/12\/04\/aevum-unveils-ravn-x-autonomous-launch-vehicle-for-lightweight-satellites\/\">Ravn X<\/a> is designed to release the rocket-powered second stage which then takes over boosting the 100 kilogram payload into orbit. This fills a niche in providing a responsive launch capability that can be readied at much shorter notice compared to traditional launch vehicles like the Falcon 9 or Vulcan Centaur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Aevum distinguishes Ravn X from air launch methods (such as Northrop Grumman\u2019s Pegasus or Virgin Orbit\u2019s LauncherOne) as the vehicle is not dropping the rocket but rather accelerating it up through the atmosphere. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mVIT8pzmQi\">pic.twitter.com\/mVIT8pzmQi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michael Sheetz (@thesheetztweetz) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/thesheetztweetz\/status\/1334551237514178564?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The U.S. Air Force <a href=\"https:\/\/space.skyrocket.de\/doc_lau\/ravn.htm\">contracted Aevum in 2019<\/a> to provide the launch system for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.losangeles.spaceforce.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/1955385\/space-and-missile-systems-center-awards-49-million-small-rocket-program-orbital\/\">ASLON-45 mission<\/a>, featuring a number of cubesats.
