The attack occurred overnight between Sept. 8 and 9, 2026, during the latest round of Iranian retaliatory attacks following U.S. strikes against five Iranian tankers.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>CBS News<\/em>, approximately eight <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/01\/21\/strike-eagles-deploy-to-the-middle-east\/\">F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets<\/a> sustained light damage in the attack. The attack reportedly struck the Warthog and left it missing one of its wings, although details regarding the extent of damage to the rest of the aircraft and whether it will be repairable are not available.<\/p>\n<p>No U.S. casualties have been reported so far. <em>CBS News<\/em> reports that more than 30 Patriot missiles were launched as part of the defensive effort against the Iranian missiles. The base is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/goto?url=CAESfgHrOzAVLVFs40fkxC-iyuZjYIaI3YDg9cSHWYC4DrdVTRycAx-OfL6yMKuUUKT-u1j84womk9vDSuoIcdoewBOz9N8O_C06fkQGMjXCUMMMmBJBGVReC0mImskmyd25_FTe92rbxlc4tFgYreUu507TIQwyTAW4YmDODHk2_g\">operated by the Royal Jordanian Air Force<\/a> and has become an important forward operating location for U.S. forces in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Air Force\u2019s 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing operates from the base, supporting a variety of combat, air defense and expeditionary missions. The concentration of combat aircraft makes the base a particularly valuable target in any Iranian effort to disrupt U.S. air operations in the region.<\/p>\n<h3>The Iranian attack<\/h3>\n<p>The latest attack came amid the recent sharp escalation between Washington and Tehran. On Sept. 8, the U.S. said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PUBLIC-RELEASES\/Article\/4593050\/us-destroys-5-irgc-tankers-after-iran-targets-another-american-warship\/\">it had destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers<\/a> in response to Iranian ballistic-missile attacks against an unspecified U.S. Navy warship.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">CENTCOM forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 8, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over the past two days. As mentioned earlier, <em>CBS News<\/em> reported that U.S. forces in Jordan fired more than 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/08\/20\/patriot-pac-3-mse-360-degree-capability-ltadms-radar\/\">Patriot missiles<\/a> to intercept the Iranian ballistic missiles during the attack.<\/p>\n<p>The number of Iranian missiles fired at the base is unknown, and we have no information about how many of these were able to penetrate the defenses and hit meaningful targets. Caycee Cook<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Because of this, aircraft would also be more likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2026\/04\/15\/battle-repaired-kc-135-arrives-at-tinker\/\">hit by shrapnel from nearby explosions<\/a>. Although unconfirmed, that could be the case of the Strike Eagles, since they only sustained light damage and reportedly already returned to operational status.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the damage to the A-10 might indicate a closer hit. It should be noted that the reported loss of a wing does not necessarily mean the aircraft has been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, aircraft that suffer significant structural damage while parked can potentially be recovered and repaired, depending on damage to the fuselage, engines, and other major components.
