MTU re-enters Taiwanese market with EVA Air engine MRO deal

Taiwan’s EVA Air has awarded MTU Maintenance a long-term engine MRO contract covering the CFM56-5B engines powering its fleet of 17 Airbus A321-200 aircraft.

The agreement covers all shop visits, which will be carried out at MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, the company’s specialist facility for narrowbody aircraft engines.

EVA Air will also have access to the engine lease pool of MTU Maintenance Lease Services if spare engine support is required during shop visits.

MTU Maintenance said the agreement marks its re-entry into the Taiwanese market, following its last contract with a Taiwanese carrier in 2016, and supports its ambition to strengthen its position as a leading engine MRO provider in the region.

The contract also marks the first time EVA Air has selected an independent company for comprehensive engine maintenance on exclusive terms, having previously used original equipment manufacturers for engine MRO.

Steve Liu, executive vice president of engineering and maintenance at EVA Air, said: “EVA Air has very high expectations of our service providers. Over the course of the talks and negotiations, MTU Maintenance’s extensive capabilities and technical expertise convinced us that it is the right partner to entrust our CFM56-5Bs for reliable and expert service.”

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai surpassed 5,000 shop visits in 2025.

Gert Wagner, president and chief executive of MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, said: “…we have now set our sights on the next phase for the location: to be the best choice for narrowbody engines on the APAC market. This contract represents yet another building block in achieving that goal.”

In addition to the CFM56-5B and -7B variants, MTU Maintenance Zhuhai services the LEAP-1A and -1B, IAE V2500 and Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM GTF engines.

In 2025, MTU moved MRO production for its PW1100G-JM engine programme to a new engine MRO facility in Jinwan, making it the world’s largest MRO shop for narrowbody engines, according to the company.

Once fully ramped up, the location will have a combined capacity of more than 700 shop visits annually.

MTU Maintenance Zhuhai was founded in 2001 as a 50/50 joint venture between China Southern Airlines and MTU Aero Engines.
